How WoW Rotation Helpers Work

· 5 min read

A WoW rotation helper is a tool that decides, or presses for you, which ability to use next. This guide explains what goes into that decision so you can judge any helper on its merits.

What a rotation actually is

Every specialization in World of Warcraft has a priority list: a ranked set of abilities that depends on your resources, cooldowns, buffs and the enemies in front of you. The best ability to press can change several times a second.

A rotation helper encodes that priority list so the decision is made consistently instead of from memory.

What a helper has to read

To choose well, a helper needs the same information a good player watches.

  • Your resources, such as energy, rage, mana or combo points
  • Ability cooldowns and charges
  • Buffs and debuffs on you and on the target
  • How many enemies are in range and how far away they are
  • Whether you are moving, mounted or casting

Settings matter as much as the list

The same specialization is played differently in different situations. A good helper lets you decide which cooldowns it may use, when defensives fire and whether it may move or retarget for you, instead of making those choices silently.

The LUX Assassination page shows this in practice: every decision the rotation makes and every setting that changes it.

What a helper cannot promise

No rotation tool can guarantee a particular result or guarantee that it is safe. Using third-party automation goes against Blizzard's Terms of Service and can lead to account action. Read the rules of the game and decide for yourself before you use any tool.

How to judge a helper

Look for documentation of what each spec does, a visible update history and honest statements about what is not finished. A tool that tells you what it does not support yet is easier to trust than one that claims everything. LUX lists its status per spec on the rotations page and its prices on the pricing page.
